What’s an Activity?
An Activity is your "bucket" for student videos from a specific assignment or recording activity. Each Activity lets you:
- Associate videos to a specific assignment such as “Group Presentation 1,” "Personal Story," or “New Product Training”
- Set specific options, scoring, and permissions for how presenters will be recorded and critiqued for videos in that Activity.
- Choose whether this will be a Test type of Activity and if it will be timed.
How do I create an Activity?
If you are using GoReact only at goreact.com, skip to step 1 below. For LMS users, all information below starting with step 2 is applicable to your activity setup, but the method for installing the GoReact tool and getting to the activity setup screen varies. Please see our Instructor Documentation and click on the LMS you are using, then follow the guides for installing GoReact and/or setting up your assignment in your LMS before proceeding so step 2.
- To create an Activity, first select the course from the course drop down on the upper left, then click the "Create Activity" button at the lower left corner of your GoReact dashboard.
- Give the Activity a name, set dates and total points if you wish, and select the appropriate type of Activity. (Details for each option are described below.)
Due and available dates
- Due Date: You may optionally set a date when this Activity is due. GoReact will allow video submissions for this Activity after the due date, but they will be flagged red so you know they were submitted late.
- Availability Date: You may optionally set a date when this Activity will become visible to student presenters. If no date is set, the Activity is available immediately.
Enter the total points possible for this Activity, unless you want to include a rubric. When a rubric is added, the rubric score will determine the number of points possible for the Activity.
Check the "Test" box if you wish to make this activity a test. You can optionally impose a time limit for how long a student participant's recording may be. To do so, enter the recording time limit in minutes.
Enabling the Test option on an activity enforces the following:
- Only one submission is allowed per student participant, and only one recording attempt is allowed.
- If a time limit is entered, the participant's recording will end automatically when the time limit is reached.
- Students may not delete their submission from the Dashboard.
- Stimulus media (if applicable) may not be previewed.
- Instructors can reset a participant's test by simply deleting their video submission from the Dashboard using the button. This will allow a new submission.
Choose this option for self-submission assignments, or for recordings where no live feedback is given. This allows participants to record their own videos and submit them for feedback. This option is useful for self-directed recordings, field recordings, and more.
Choose this option for activities that will include LIVE feedback entered during a presentation/recording. Any reviewers (including peers, if enabled) may simultaneously give real-time feedback on live instructor-led recordings or on recording sessions initiated by the participants themselves. This type is commonly used for communication and public speaking activities.
Choose this option if you wish to have participants record a video response to a video (or other media) you have provided as a stimulus/prompt. The recorded response will be synchronized to the stimulus media. This type is commonly used in interpreting and other language activities, for mock interviews, and other prompt-oriented responses.
Choose this option if you wish to have participants provide only comments on a stimulus/prompt media you provide without recording their own video response. You also have specific feedback options unique to this activity type:
- Group Discussion: allows participants to have a conversation about the stimulus/prompt media, seeing all comments from everyone. If unchecked, comments remain private as usual.
- Individual Graded Response: allows the instructor to score each participant individually on their comments. Using this option will result in an individual video session appearing on the dashboard for each student participant.
NOTE: To participate in a Comment Only Activity, student participants do not click "Create Video." Instead, they will see a Start Activity button in the middle of their dashboard.
In addition, note that for this activity type, the "Test" option (mentioned above) is not available because no recording is submitted.
Click "Create Activity" and the Activity settings page displays where you can select permissions, feedback options, enter instructions, and add source media (if applicable). Note that you can also access all of the previous options by selecting Edit Activity from the Activity Options menu (three dots) on the righthand side of the activity name.
Under the Recording panel you can add text or media instructions, select, upload, or record your stimulus media (if applicable) and choose whether students can submit their own stimulus media. Note that if you have chosen a Stimulus/Prompt activity type, the panel will display red and you'll see a red exclamation
in your activity list until the source media has been added. If you would like students to be able to submit their own stimulus media, simply check the box next to "Student Selected Stimulus/Prompt."
- Text: recording instructions can be entered here to assist those who may be recording videos for this Activity. Give brief instructions or reminders to participants who are recording (this could be for your assistants or for the students themselves if it's a Presenter Self-Record Activity).
- Video: video instructions can be recorded or uploaded here if you would like to submit a video guide instead of typing out your instructions to the Activity participants.
If you wish to add additional reference material for this activity you may add it here. This is useful for posting examples, background material, or anything else helpful for the participant in creating their submission. It can be anything from a Word document or PDF to images or a PowerPoint file. These resources will be available to presenters before, during, and after recording. Presenters can also attach their own files to their individual video submissions.
If the Activity is a "stimulus" type recording, you can add the stimulus/prompt media to the Activity for the participants to respond to. Click the "Add Media" button to upload, record, or add a file from your Library. If you would like students to submit and respond to their own source media, check the box next to "Student Selected Stimulus/Prompt" (Not available in LMS integrations). Slide Sync allows students to add PDF slides to their recording in GoReact. They can use this to give an awesome presentation with a supporting PowerPoint (exported to PDF)! Instructors can enable Slide Sync on Presenter Self-Record and Live/In-Class Record activities. To enable Slide Sync just check the "Allow Presenter Slide Deck" box under Recording Options. Under the Feedback panel you can add text or media instructions and select what type of feedback you wish students to provide for this activity.
- Text: Feedback can be entered here to assist those who may be critiquing videos for this Activity. Give brief instructions or reminders to your participants on what they need to know before giving feedback.
- Video: Video instructions can be recorded or uploaded here if you would like to submit a video guide instead of typing out your instructions to the activity participants.
Peer Critique: Allows all course presenters to give feedback on each others' recordings. When critiquing a peer, they can only see their own comments unless "All comments are public" is enabled. They will only be able to see their own grades, always.
All comments are public: Allows everyone in the course to see all timeline feedback (not evaluations), including comments, markers, and ratings. If unchecked, only instructors and the video's presenter(s) can see these items.
Instructor Rubric: Lets you add a structured evaluation to the Activity. You can create a Rubric or choose one you've previously used from your Library. For more on using rubrics, see Using the rubric feature.
Markers: Are a set of labels that you create for marking up a video in addition to comments. They are time-coded into the video within the comment stream. See Using the Markers feature for more about Markers.
Group Discussion: Allows all participants to see each others' comments. (Note: This option is only available after selecting the Stimulus-Comment Only activity type.)
Individual Graded Response: Allows the instructor to grade each participant individually, whether it's a group discussion or individual responses. (Note: This option is only available after selecting the Stimulus - Comment Only activity type.)
A note about feedback permissions: Instructors and reviewers can always give any type of feedback that is enabled for an Activity. Presenter feedback is dependent on the permissions set by the instructor, as indicated above.
